Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes near Nemuro, Nemuro-shi, Hokkaido, Japan An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred around noon on Sunday, August 24th, 2025, at 12:13 pm local time near Nemuro, Nemuro-shi, Hokkaido, Japan, as reported by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a great depth of 380.60 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hamanaka-sakuraminami (pop. 5,500) located 11 km from the epicenter, Akkeshi (pop. 8,900) 26 km away, Nemuro (pop. 31,200) 44 km away, Shibecha (pop. 7,200) 55 km away, Nakashibetsu (pop. 24,000) 56 km away, Kushiro (pop. 167,900) 65 km away, Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 66 km away, and Kitami (pop. 119,100) 132 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
