Significant magnitude 5.8 quake hits 39 km southwest of Acajutla, El Salvador early morning The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.8 quake in El Salvador near Acajutla, Departamento de Sonsonate, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at 3:14 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 49. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.9, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.8, and The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Acajutla (pop. 22,800) located 39 km from the epicenter, Sonzacate (pop. 15,400) 59 km away, Izalco (pop. 19,200) 63 km away, Chalchuapa (pop. 32,300) 83 km away, Santa Ana (pop. 176,700) 91 km away, Santa Tecla (pop. 124,700) 96 km away, and Antiguo Cuscatlan (pop. 33,800) 98 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Salvador (pop. 526,000) located 106 km from the epicenter, and Soyapango (pop. 329,700) 111 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
