Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.2 earthquake 13 km southeast of Puyo, Ecuador Ecuador was shaken near Puyo, Pastaza, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 9 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 158.80 km beneath the epicenter near Puyo, Pastaza, Ecuador, in the morning on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025, at 9:56 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puyo (pop. 24,900) located 13 km from the epicenter, Palora (pop. 6,500) 16 km away, Banos (pop. 9,500) 59 km away, Pelileo (pop. 16,600) 74 km away, Riobamba (pop. 264,000) 82 km away, Ambato (pop. 387,300) 85 km away, Macas (pop. 23,700) 86 km away, and Latacunga (pop. 205,600) 104 km away.
