Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.4 just reported 24 km north of Puerto Escondido, Mexico The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Mexico near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Estado de Oaxaca, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday, October 5th, 2025, at 8:09 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In San Gabriel Mixtepec (pop. 3,500) located 4 km from the epicenter, Santos Reyes Nopala (pop. 5,200) 11 km away, and Santa Maria Tiltepec (pop. 2,200) 13 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Bajos de Chila (pop. 5,400) located 20 km from the epicenter, Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) 24 km away, Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) 28 km away, Rio Grande (pop. 12,900) 43 km away, and Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) 55 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
