Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 86 km southeast of Mobara, Japan in the morning An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 13 minutes ago 86 km southeast of Mobara, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 53. km beneath the epicenter near Mobara, Mobara Shi, Chiba, Japan, in the morning on Wednesday, November 5th, 2025, at 7:17 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 4.9, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Katsuura (pop. 16,900) located 59 km from the epicenter, Isumi (pop. 35,500) 62 km away, Kamogawa (pop. 32,100) 71 km away, Tateyama (pop. 50,100) 86 km away, Mobara (pop. 88,300) 86 km away, Oami (pop. 53,200) 94 km away, Togane (pop. 66,300) 95 km away, and Sodegaura (pop. 64,900) 99 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
