Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes near Hachinohe, Hachinohe Shi, Aomori, Japan

Just 9 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Hachinohe, Hachinohe Shi, Aomori, Japan. The tremor was recorded early evening on Tuesday, November 18th, 2025, at 6:21 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 4.60 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hitokawame (pop. 24,300) located 105 km from the epicenter, Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) 106 km away, Kuji (pop. 34,400) 108 km away, Misawa (pop. 42,800) 109 km away, Towada (pop. 60,700) 125 km away, and Mutsu (pop. 56,200) 128 km away.
