Moderate magnitude 4.8 earthquake 30 km southeast of Bireun, Indonesia

An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred after midnight on Tuesday, November 25th, 2025, at 12:30 am local time near Bireun, Bireuën Regency, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sigli (pop. 17,500) located 104 km from the epicenter, and Meulaboh (pop. 64,600) 116 km away.
