Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 3 km northwest of Neiva, Colombia An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred only 13 minutes ago 3 km northwest of Neiva, Colombia, The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 34. km beneath the epicenter near Neiva, Departamento del Huila, Colombia, in the morning on Sunday, December 21st, 2025, at 9:05 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Neiva (pop. 357,400) located 3 km from the epicenter, Palermo (pop. 9,900) 16 km away, Rivera (pop. 22,900) 20 km away, Campoalegre (pop. 22,600) 29 km away, and Planadas (pop. 21,600) 47 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gigante (pop. 36,100) located 68 km from the epicenter, Belalcazar (pop. 37,000) 82 km away, and Garzon (pop. 29,500) 91 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
