Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.2 just reported 28 miles northwest of Santa Rosa, California, United States

Just 3 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Thursday, January 8th, 2026, at 12:00 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
