Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Surigao, Surigao del Norte, Caraga, Philippines An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 9 minutes ago 88 km northeast of Surigao, Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Surigao, Surigao del Norte, Caraga, Philippines, after midnight on Tuesday, January 13th, 2026, at 12:48 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Pilar (pop. 2,400) located 25 km from the epicenter, and Santa Monica (pop. 2,300) 25 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Benito (pop. 2,300) located 29 km from the epicenter, Libas (pop. 3,400) 34 km away, Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte (pop. 4,300) 36 km away, Dapa (pop. 8,800) 37 km away, San Jose (pop. 26,700) 79 km away, and Surigao (pop. 87,800) 88 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
