Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Maumere, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 6 minutes ago 70 km southeast of Maumere, Indonesia, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Maumere, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, late at night on Wednesday, January 14th, 2026, at 10:39 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Maumere (pop. 87,700) located 70 km from the epicenter, and Ende (pop. 87,300) 98 km away.
