Small earthquake of magnitude 3.9 just reported 21 km northwest of Erdemli, Turkey

A very shallow magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Erdemli, Erdemli İlçesi, Mersin, Turkey.
According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake hit on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, at 4:12 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 7. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kustulu (pop. 750) located 1 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kocahasanli (pop. 5,700) located 19 km from the epicenter, Erdemli (pop. 46,600) 21 km away, Arpacbahsis (pop. 7,300) 23 km away, and Pinarbasi (pop. 11,000) 23 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Silifke (pop. 75,300) located 38 km from the epicenter, Tasucu (pop. 15,200) 46 km away, Mersin (pop. 537,800) 49 km away, and Mut (pop. 49,400) 60 km away.
