Moderate 4.6 quake hits near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Estado de Oaxaca, Mexico An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred only 21 minutes ago 34 km southeast of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 13.60 km beneath the epicenter near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Estado de Oaxaca, Mexico, around noon on Monday, February 23rd, 2026, at 1:23 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In San Francisco Cozoaltepec (pop. 2,100) located 5 km from the epicenter, and Santo Domingo de Morelos (pop. 1,600) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) located 31 km from the epicenter, San Pedro Pochutla (pop. 13,700) 32 km away, Puerto Escondido (pop. 29,900) 34 km away, Huatulco (pop. 7,400) 47 km away, Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) 62 km away, and Crucecita (pop. 15,100) 67 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
