Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 11 km northwest of Miki, Japan An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in the evening on Wednesday, March 25th, 2026, at 8:31 pm local time near Miki, Miki Shi, Hyōgo, Japan, as reported by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 18. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Yashiro (pop. 21,600) located 2 km from the epicenter, Ono (pop. 47,600) 6 km away, Kato (pop. 40,600) 7 km away, Nishiwaki (pop. 38,700) 9 km away, Kasai (pop. 42,700) 11 km away, and Miki (pop. 75,500) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
