Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 43 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States in the morning A shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday, April 5th, 2026, at 11:41 am local time at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 2 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Discovery Harbor (pop. 1,200) located 17 miles from the epicenter, and Volcano (pop. 2,600) 21 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 41 miles away, Hilo (pop. 43,300) 43 miles away, Holualoa (pop. 8,500) 43 miles away, and Kailua-Kona (pop. 12,000) 47 miles away.
