Moderate magnitude 4.3 earthquake 74 km southwest of San Jose, Costa Rica An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred only 14 minutes ago 74 km southwest of San Jose, Costa Rica, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 6. km beneath the epicenter near San Jose, San José, Provincia de San Jose, Costa Rica, in the evening on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, at 8:54 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Jaco (pop. 4,100) located 11 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tejar (pop. 22,400) located 49 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Rafael Abajo (pop. 27,400) located 50 km from the epicenter, Esparza (pop. 15,600) 53 km away, Chacarita (pop. 26,400) 55 km away, Aserri (pop. 25,900) 69 km away, San Miguel (pop. 28,800) 72 km away, San Jose (pop. 335,000) 74 km away, San Francisco (pop. 55,900) 75 km away, and Curridabat (pop. 34,600) 77 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
