OP Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 678,976 Los Angeles, USA	Significant magnitude 5.2 quake hits 31 km southwest of Port Vila, Vanuatu early morning A moderately shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported early morning near Port Vila, Shefa Province, Vanuatu. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday, May 20th, 2026, at 1:18 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Pango (pop. 2,500) located 25 km from the epicenter, and Port Vila (pop. 35,900) 31 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
