Small magnitude 3.0 quake hits 44 km south of Izmir, Turkey in the morning

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Izmir, Turkey, was reported only 20 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 6.20 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Sunday, May 31st, 2026, at 7:27 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 3.4, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 2.9, The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.0, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 2.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in OEzdere (pop. 13,500) located 0 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kusadasi (pop. 63,200) located 21 km from the epicenter, Selcuk (pop. 29,100) 23 km away, Menderes (pop. 22,000) 26 km away, and Torbali (pop. 50,300) 26 km away. In Karabaglar (pop. 458,000, 41 km away), Konak (pop. 332,300, 43 km away), Izmir (pop. 2,938,300, 44 km away), and Karsiyaka (pop. 339,600, 49 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
