Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 just reported 26 km southwest of Farrashband, Iran

A shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported early evening near Farrashband, Fars, Iran.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday, June 5th, 2026, at 6:38 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Farrashband (pop. 20,300) located 26 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Firuzabad (pop. 66,600) located 72 km from the epicenter, Borazjan (pop. 86,100) 80 km away, Kazerun (pop. 94,500) 94 km away, Kavar (pop. 31,700) 95 km away, Bushehr (pop. 165,400) 100 km away, and Bushehr (pop. 165,400) 100 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Shiraz (pop. 1,249,900) located 113 km from the epicenter.
