Significant magnitude 5.5 earthquake 91 km northeast of Nuku'alofa, Tonga Just 38 minutes ago, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Nuku'alofa, Kolofo'ou, Tongatapu, Tonga. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Monday, July 6th, 2026, at 9:07 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 22.20 km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Niutoua (pop. 710) located 79 km from the epicenter, Mu'a (pop. 3,900) 88 km away, Popua (pop. 2,300) 91 km away, 'Ohonua (pop. 1,500) 91 km away, Nuku'alofa (pop. 22,400) 91 km away, Pangai (pop. 1,700) 93 km away, Haveluloto (pop. 3,500) 93 km away, Vaini (pop. 3,300) 93 km away, and Tofoa-Koloua (pop. 3,500) 95 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
