Successive heatwaves and increasing drought conditions are fueling wildfires across France and Europe. The images above show smoke emanating from a fast-moving wildfire in southwestern France near Bordeaux that started on July 22, 2026, and spread quickly overnight. News outlets reported that more than 10,000 people were evacuated when the fire moved quickly and burned about 2,400 hectares.
Overlaid on the image are orange dots that indicate the location of the fire. The area burned can be seen more clearly by moving the swipe bar to the right to view a false-color image that shows the burned area in red, and the surrounding vegetation in green. The images are from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the Terra platform.
