Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 31 miles southeast of Midland, Texas, United States, early morning The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.1 quake in the United States near Midland, Midland County, Texas, only 15 minutes ago. The earthquake struck early Thursday morning, September 24, 2026, at 3:36 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 3 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibrations in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Garden City (pop. 330), located 20 miles from the epicenter; Midland (pop. 132,500), 31 miles away; Stanton (pop. 2,900), 33 miles away; Big Lake (pop. 3,300), 36 miles away; Odessa (pop. 114,400), 40 miles away; and Crane (pop. 3,900), 42 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Big Spring (pop. 28,900), located 43 miles from the epicenter, and West Odessa (pop. 22,700), 48 miles away.
