SPC Severe Thunderstorm Watch 697WW 697 SEVERE TSTM NM TX 242055Z - 250400Z
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED Severe Thunderstorm Watch Number 697 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 155 PM MST Sat Oct 24 2026
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of Central into Southeast New Mexico Far West Texas
* Effective this Saturday afternoon and evening from 155 PM until 900 PM MST.
* Primary threats include... Scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75 mph possible Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter possible A tornado or two possible
SUMMARY...Thunderstorm coverage is expected to increase this afternoon through this evening from central New Mexico into south-central/southeast New Mexico and adjacent far west Texas. Environmental conditions support the potential for supercells, particularly this afternoon, with large hail as the primary severe risk. A trend towards linear bowing segments is possible this evening, with strong gusts becoming the primary hazard. Additionally, given the supercell storm mode, a low-probability tornado risk exists across the region as well.
The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 80 statute miles east and west of a line from 65 miles north northeast of Socorro NM to 65 miles southeast of El Paso TX. For a complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline update (WOUS64 KWNS WOU7).
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.
&&
AVIATION...A few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 65 knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm motion vector 22030.
