I recall seeing studies and a doco about babies innately being attracted to symmetrical faces, so there is something to it.

As for socially accepted attractiveness, it depends culture and time period. All sorts of traits are considered attractive by some culture at some point in time. Probably.

And maybe other "endowments" are given by the great fairness of the universe to make up for those who are asymmetrical.
