Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.2 reported 89 km northeast of Tocopilla, Chile

A moderately shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported around noon near Tocopilla, Provincia de Tocopilla, Antofagasta, Chile.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday 30 August 2021 at 12:26 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 44.8 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tocopilla (pop. 24,500) located 89 km from the epicenter.
