Magnitude 3.8 earthquake strikes near Ioannina, Epirus, Greece 3.8 quake 31 Dec 1:11 am (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred only 10 minutes ago 27 km northwest of Ioannina, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Ioannina, Epirus, Greece, early morning on Saturday, December 31st, 2022, at 1:11 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kretsounista (pop. 92) located 2 km from the epicenter, Rodotopi (pop. 1,100) 15 km away, and Eleousa (pop. 3,500) 21 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kardamitsia (pop. 3,200) located 24 km from the epicenter, Ioannina (pop. 65,600) 27 km away, Pedini (pop. 2,900) 29 km away, Anatoli (pop. 9,800) 29 km away, Igoumenitsa (pop. 9,500) 35 km away, and Sarandë (pop. 15,100) 50 km away.
