Small tremor of magnitude 2.6 just reported 27 km northwest of Mostaganem, Algeria

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 2.6 quake in Algeria near Mostaganem, only 21 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Friday, August 16th, 2024, at 4:42 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which listed it as a magnitude 2.6 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Mostaganem (pop. 130,000, 27 km away), and Aïn el Bya (pop. 37,200, 47 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
