An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 8 minutes ago 89 km southwest of Wewak, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 52 km beneath the epicenter near Wewak, East Sepik, Papua New Guinea, in the morning on Monday, September 9th, 2024, at 9:15 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
