Small magnitude 3.2 earthquake 11 miles northwest of Santa Rosa, California, United States 3.2 quake 29 Oct 6:00 pm (GMT -7) A very shallow magnitude 3.2 earthquake was reported early evening near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, October 29th, 2024, at 6:00 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Windsor (pop. 27,500) located 3 miles from the epicenter, and Russian River (pop. 11,700) 5 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Larkfield-Wikiup (pop. 8,900) located 6 miles from the epicenter, Santa Rosa (pop. 175,000) 11 miles away, and Rohnert Park (pop. 42,400) 18 miles away. In Petaluma (pop. 60,400, 26 miles away), Clearlake (pop. 15,200, 27 miles away), Napa (pop. 80,400, 34 miles away), and Novato (pop. 55,500, 35 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
