Small magnitude 3.0 earthquake 17 miles southwest of Tennant Creek, Australia

A shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Tennant Creek, Barkly, Northern Territory, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Wednesday, February 12th, 2025, at 2:07 pm local time at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Tennant Creek (pop. 3,200, 17 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
