Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.0 just reported 25 km southwest of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico A shallow magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported around noon near Puerto Vallarta, Estado de Jalisco, Mexico. According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at 1:42 pm local time at a shallow depth of 15.20 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Yelapa (pop. 730) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Puerto Vallarta (pop. 224,200) 25 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Las Juntas (pop. 9,000) located 30 km from the epicenter, Mezcales (pop. 20,100) 31 km away, Bucerias (pop. 16,200) 31 km away, Ixtapa (pop. 29,000) 34 km away, San Vicente (pop. 14,300) 34 km away, and San Jose del Valle (pop. 22,500) 37 km away.
