Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 45 km southeast of Casarano, Italy after midnight An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 5 minutes ago 45 km southeast of Casarano, Italy, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 66.80 km beneath the epicenter near Casarano, Provincia di Lecce, Apulia, Italy, after midnight on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026, at 12:13 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Leuca (pop. 1,300) located 18 km from the epicenter, Tricase (pop. 13,700) 27 km away, Casarano (pop. 19,400) 45 km away, Galatina (pop. 19,600) 58 km away, Gallipoli (pop. 19,200) 59 km away, and Nardo (pop. 29,700) 66 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Copertino (pop. 23,500) located 72 km from the epicenter, and Lecce (pop. 80,700) 76 km away.
