Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 6 km southwest of Merouana, Algeria after midnight An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 11 minutes ago 6 km southwest of Merouana, Algeria, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Merouana, Daïra de Merouana, Batna, Algeria, after midnight on Thursday, June 4th, 2026, at 12:16 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Merouana (pop. 47,600) located 6 km from the epicenter, Ain Touta (pop. 55,700) 23 km away, Ras el Aioun (pop. 34,200) 24 km away, and N'Gaous (pop. 29,500) 24 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Batna City (pop. 289,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, Tazoult-Lambese (pop. 41,600) 36 km away, 'Ain Azel (pop. 38,000) 43 km away, and Barika (pop. 98,100) 51 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Constantine (pop. 448,000) located 110 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
