A magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Pāhala, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, was reported only 16 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 22 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday, June 5th, 2022, at 6:13 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.0.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Pāhala (pop. 1,400, 1 mile away), Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 20 miles away), Volcano Village (pop. 2,600, 24 miles away), Mountain View (pop. 3,900, 35 miles away), Holualoa (pop. 8,500, 43 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 43 miles away), Hilo (pop. 43,300, 45 miles away), and Kailua-Kona (pop. 12,000, 46 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
