Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 86 km southeast of Arawa, Papua New Guinea 4.8 quake 17 Jun 11:10 pm (GMT +11) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, was reported only 26 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 95.2 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Friday, June 17th, 2022, at 11:10 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Buin (pop. 750) located 27 km from the epicenter, Panguna (pop. 2,900) 79 km away, Arawa (pop. 40,300) 86 km away, and Kieta (pop. 3,600) 87 km away.
