Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 19 km northeast of Mito, Japan in the morning4.1 quake 29 Jul 8:03 am (GMT +9) A moderately shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Mito, Mito-shi, Ibaraki, Japan. According to Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Friday, July 29th, 2022, at 8:03 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 55.2 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Funaishikawa (pop. 35,300) located 3 km from the epicenter, Hitachi-Naka (pop. 156,800) 10 km away, Katsuta (pop. 156,000) 11 km away, Hitachi (pop. 186,300) 16 km away, Ōarai (pop. 19,300) 17 km away, Mito (pop. 246,500) 19 km away, Ōmiya (pop. 27,600) 19 km away, Okunoya (pop. 34,600) 26 km away, and Utsunomiya (pop. 449,900) 65 km away.
