6.3 quake 14 Oct 8:20 am (GMT +10)

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 6.3 quake in Papua New Guinea near Kokopo, Kokopo District, East New Britain Province, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday, October 14th, 2022, at 8:20 am local time at an intermediate depth of 98 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 6.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kokopo (pop. 26,300) located 144 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
