Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes near Nelson, Nelson City, New Zealand5.7 quake 14 Oct 3:03 am (GMT +13) A magnitude 5.7 earthquake near Nelson, Nelson City, New Zealand, was reported only 8 minutes ago by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 145.8 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Friday, October 14th, 2022, at 3:03 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Takaka (pop. 1,200) located 74 km from the epicenter, Motueka (pop. 7,500) 90 km away, Nelson (pop. 59,200) 99 km away, and Blenheim (pop. 26,600) 133 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
