Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported a magnitude 2.7 quake in Australia near Jindabyne, Snowy Monaro Regional, New South Wales, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Monday, October 24th, 2022, at 9:25 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 2.1 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 2.7 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Avonside (pop. 160) located 2 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hill Top (pop. 99) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Berridale (pop. 1,300) 6 miles away, Kalkite (pop. 220) 6 miles away, Jindabyne (pop. 6,500) 6 miles away, Beloka (pop. 20) 10 miles away, and Dalgety (pop. 240) 10 miles away. In Cooma (pop. 6,600, 24 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
