Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.2 earthquake 69 km south of Mati, Philippines5.2 quake 29 Dec 9:13 pm (GMT +8) An intermediate magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported in the evening near Mati, Davao Oriental, Davao, Philippines. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Thursday, December 29th, 2022, at 9:13 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 128 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Nangan (pop. 3,400) located 21 km from the epicenter, Luzon (pop. 3,200) 27 km away, Tibanbang (pop. 7,800) 37 km away, Sigaboy (pop. 8,000) 41 km away, Lupon (pop. 27,200) 68 km away, Mati (pop. 105,900) 69 km away, Malita (pop. 41,100) 72 km away, and Santa Maria (pop. 16,800) 90 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Central (pop. 1,212,500) located 108 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
