Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 42 miles west of Elfin Cove, Alaska, United States early evening 4.8 quake 112 mi west of Juneau, Alaska, USA, Jan 16, 2023 7:48 pm (GMT -9) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Elfin Cove, Hoonah-Angoon, Alaska, USA, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 9.6 miles beneath the epicenter early evening on Monday, January 16th, 2023, at 7:48 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Elfin Cove (pop. 20) located 42 miles from the epicenter, and Pelican (pop. 91) 47 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
