Significant magnitude 5.1 quake hits 27 km southwest of Reykjavik, Iceland late at night 5.1 quake Iceland: 1.3 Km SSW of Keilir Jul 9, 2023 10:22 pm (GMT +0) A very shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported late at night near Reykjavik, Reykjavíkurborg, Capital Region, Iceland. According to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO), the quake hit on Sunday, July 9th, 2023, at 10:22 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0.4 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Vogar (pop. 1000) located 12 km from the epicenter. In Grindavik (pop. 2,900) located 16 km from the epicenter, Hafnarfjordur (pop. 26,800) 19 km away, Alftanes (pop. 2,400) 21 km away, Garðabaer (pop. 11,400) 22 km away, Kopavogur (pop. 31,700) 24 km away, Seltjarnarnes (pop. 4,300) 26 km away, Reykjavik (pop. 118,900) 27 km away, Mosfellsbaer (pop. 8,700) 35 km away, and Mosfellsbær (pop. 8,700) 35 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
