Moderate 4.8 quake hits near Roatan Town, Roatán, Islas de la Bahia, Honduras 4.8 quake 8 Aug 2:12 am (GMT -6) A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported early morning near Roatan Town, Roatán, Islas de la Bahia, Honduras.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, at 2:12 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Guanaja (pop. 1,900) located 33 km from the epicenter, Savannah Bight (pop. 1000) 36 km away, Coxen Hole (pop. 7,500) 67 km away, Roatan Town (pop. 7,500) 68 km away, Sandy Bay (pop. 1,100) 69 km away, Puerto Castilla (pop. 1,200) 77 km away, Jerico (pop. 2,400) 85 km away, and Trujillo (pop. 9,600) 88 km away.
