Significant 5.3 quake hits near Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred early morning on Thursday, December 28th, 2023, at 2:52 am local time near Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 39 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kupang (pop. 282,400) located 9 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nusa Dua (pop. 2,300) located 57 km from the epicenter, Soe (pop. 27,700) 78 km away, Baa (pop. 1,300) 94 km away, and Kefamenanu (pop. 29,500) 119 km away.
