Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 52 miles northwest of Maitland, New South Wales, Australia 4.7 quake 7 Sep 5:58 am (GMT +10) Just 13 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Maitland, Maitland Municipality, New South Wales, Australia. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, at 5:58 am local time, at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles below the surface. The event was filed by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Muswellbrook (pop. 12,100) located 7 miles from the epicenter, Denman (pop. 1,800) 8 miles away, and Aberdeen (pop. 2,000) 13 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Scone (pop. 5,600) located 20 miles from the epicenter, Singleton Heights (pop. 4,600) 25 miles away, Cessnock (pop. 15,100) 47 miles away, and Maitland (pop. 67,100) 52 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Newcastle (pop. 308,300) located 70 miles from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
