Moderate magnitude 4.0 quake hits 41 km southwest of Trikala, Greece after midnight 4.0 quake 10 Oct 12:20 am (GMT +3) A shallow magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported after midnight near Trikala, Tríkala, Thessaly, Greece. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Thursday, October 10th, 2024, at 12:20 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Agrafa (pop. 820) located 7 km from the epicenter, Mouzaki (pop. 2,100) 26 km away, and Karditsa (pop. 32,800) 29 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Karpenisi (pop. 6,900) located 34 km from the epicenter, Trikala (pop. 61,700) 41 km away, Arta (pop. 21,900) 58 km away, Agrinio (pop. 46,900) 68 km away, Larisa (pop. 144,700) 82 km away, and Ioannina (pop. 65,600) 87 km away.
