Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.7 just reported 21 km northeast of Sitia, Greece

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Greece near Sitia, Lasithi, Crete, only 4 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday, December 29th, 2024, at 10:02 am local time at a very shallow depth of 6 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Palekastro (pop. 1,100) located 11 km from the epicenter, and Sitia (pop. 8,700) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Elounda (pop. 2,200) located 54 km from the epicenter, Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) 56 km away, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 60 km away, Neapoli (pop. 2,700) 65 km away, and Malia (pop. 4,300) 78 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Limin Khersonisou (pop. 3,000) located 84 km from the epicenter, and Heraklion (pop. 137,200) 107 km away.
