Significant 6.5 quake hits near Villavicencio, Departamento del Meta, Colombia

A shallow magnitude 6.5 earthquake was reported in the morning near Villavicencio, Departamento del Meta, Colombia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Sunday, June 8th, 2025, at 8:08 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.4. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 6.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Puerto Lopez (pop. 16,700) located 43 km from the epicenter, Monterrey (pop. 14,800) 50 km away, Restrepo (pop. 17,600) 59 km away, Villavicencio (pop. 321,700) 71 km away, and Tauramena (pop. 21,700) 71 km away.
In Acacias (pop. 40,600) located 93 km from the epicenter, Aguazul (pop. 15,700) 98 km away, Bogota (pop. 7,674,400) 113 km away, and Zipaquira (pop. 130,400) 120 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
