Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 89 km north of Naze, Japan

A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Naze, Amami Shi, Kagoshima-ken, Japan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, at 3:07 pm local time at a shallow depth of 23. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tatsugo (pop. 6,000) located 81 km from the epicenter, Naze (pop. 41,400) 89 km away, and Uken (pop. 1,800) 99 km away.
