Moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake 92 km northeast of Irakleion, Greece An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred around noon on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025, at 1:04 pm local time near Irakleion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, as reported by The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Emporeio (pop. 1,900) located 46 km from the epicenter, Messaria (pop. 1,200) 49 km away, Fira (pop. 2,400) 52 km away, Oia (pop. 3,400) 59 km away, Nea Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 90 km away, Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) 91 km away, Irakleion (pop. 137,200) 92 km away, Sitia (pop. 8,700) 96 km away, and Gazi (pop. 12,600) 96 km away.
